How to Clean Blinds, Curtains & Shutters

Window coverings like blinds, curtains and shutters play an important role in home decoration while providing light controls and privacy. However, they can heap up dust and dirt over time. So, it’s necessary to arrange the cleaning regularly. Due to the different fabrics and materials, the cleaning methods and processes are varied. Please see below for the suggested cleaning methods and processes for different types of blinds, venetians, curtains and shutters.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are the most popular products as they have simple structures and are easy to use. Most Roller Blinds Fabrics are made from Polyester and Acrylic Coating, which makes cleaning relatively easier compared to other types of blinds.

  • Surface dust should be removed with a duster or soft cloth.

  • Light stains can be removed by gently wiping with a damp sponge or soft cloth.

  • Never use abrasive products or solvents and industrial-based cleaners because they will damage the coating of the fabric.

  • Do not roll up when the fabric is damp.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are made from horizontal slats of timber, PVC or aluminium. They can quickly accumulate dust and dirt between the slats.

  • To remove the dust, pull down the blinds, open the slats, and use a microfiber duster or a vacuum with a brush to clean the slats.

  • Also, you can wipe all the slats with a damp sponge or soft cloth.

  • For the Timber Venetians, ensure the wooden slats are dried enough before closing or rolling them up.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are made up of vertical slats and the slat fabrics are similar to roller blinds. So, the cleaning method is similar to the roller blinds.

  • Surface dust should be removed with a duster or soft cloth.

  • A damp sponge or soft cloth can remove light stains.

  • Avoid abrasive products or solvents and industrial-based cleaners because they will damage the coating of the fabric.

  • Do not move aside the slats when the fabric is damp.

Sheer Curtains

Sheer curtains are lightweight products often made from materials like polyester or linen. They require gentle handling to avoid damage.

  • Machine Wash: Check the fabric info label to see if the sheer fabrics are machine washable. If the answer is yes, use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Hang them to dry before re-installing onto the tracks.

  • Hand Wash: If machine washing is not recommended, hand wash them in a proper size tub/basin or container with cold water and a small amount of detergent if needed. Make sure to hang them dry enough before putting them back.

  • For the small amount or just a few spots of stains, you can also try to gently wipe them with a soft damp cloth.

Blockout Curtains

Blockout curtains are much heavier than sheer curtains, designed to block out the light and provide insulation. The fabrics are made of polyester or acrylic which looks more solid. The heavy curtain fabrics can gather dust and dirt easily. There are a few cleaning options below:

  • Vacuuming: Most blockout curtain fabrics can be vacuumed to remove dust and dirt. Start from the lowest vacuum power to avoid fabric damage.

  • Machine Washing: If the fabric care label permits, wash the curtains in cold water on a gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softeners, as they may damage the fabrics and change the fabric textures. Dry before putting it back!

  • Spot Cleaning: For small dirt or stains, use a damp soft cloth or wipes and a mild detergent if needed. Apply the cloth or wipes on the stain gently instead of rubbing it to avoid spreading the dirt.

Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are also very popular among our customers at Blinds Melbourne Vic and are designed to highlight your home's aesthetics. They’re made from high-quality hardwoods or PVC and are either stained or painted in a popular collection of soft neutral colours. They require regular maintenance to keep them shining.

  • Dusting: Use a microfiber duster or a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt from the shutter’s Louvres and the frames.

  • Deep Cleaning: Wipe the shutters with a soft damp cloth or wipes. Avoid using excessive water, as it can damage the wood and cause warping. If too much water is applied to the shutters, dry them with a clean soft cloth asap.

By following these guidelines, you can keep your window coverings clean and prolong their lifespan. Regular cleaning not only improves the appearance of your home but also brings you a healthier living environment with less dust and allergens.
